@eff Instead of continuing to suck on those clankers' big fat vape pens, maybe you should do something about those same AI companies engaging in attacks on people's websites by scraping them to death.

I had this happen to my small blog last night. One of the main culprits was a seedbox company. These aren't artists or remixers. They are cyber criminals!

Stop clanking off these cyber criminals already!

Colleague about my age, English not her first language. Remarked that "AI" is super helpful for making her written English more correct.

"Wow, hadn't thought of that. I still have huge problems with all the ethical issues with LLMs."

      "Oh, no, it's VERY ethical."

      "Hm. How do you mean?"

"I had a really problematic student in the lab. Extremely disruptive, inappropriate behavior. I asked AI what to do and its advice was very helpful."

Honestly don't know what happened next, everything went black

My take on workslop: if your job can be done by just copying and pasting slop… why are you here, exactly? Maybe we need an update on the old sysadmin threat of “go away, or I will replace you with a very small shell script”; these days, it would be “a very short prompt”.

Can someone help me understand the lore behind the claim "what the AI companies are working on will kill us all"?

Because from where I'm sitting, it looks like this:

                1. LLMs and machine learning
                2. Secret research
                3. ???
                4. Sentient self-improving AI arises and kills us all

A neighbor of mine was making the point that is just a natural evolution of tool-ing. After all we don't expect students to know how to start a fire with sticks, tan a hide, or sharpen a quill. I felt moved to point out that I did, in fact, know how to do all those skills by the time I was 25.

I guess the fact that I still write every damn like of code myself is just a reflection of me hanging onto antiquated skill sets.

                              And none for AI.

There’s an AI “meeting transcription and summary tool” for video meetings at my workplace that comes with a disclaimer that it should not be used if anyone does not consent.

                                              I never consent.

Last time I said I didn’t want to use the tool in a meeting with a group of people I’m new to meeting, the meeting organizer asked “may I know why?” and I responded “Because I don’t consent,” and gave a blank stare. The organizer was visibly annoyed.

This is a pattern with all these AI tools. Non-consent is perceived as an annoyance. The people refusing to use AI are perceived as the problem, not the AI tool. Consent is an inconvenience, not a right to be respected.
