deleted all the Monkey Cage stuff - having had no prior warning until I saw the announcement of it on a news site, it was a huge shock - let me use this time instead to say - it’s Bandcamp Friday and Rachel and me offer you new poetry and music https://normallyweirdassociates.bandcamp.com/album/the-final-den #poetry #music #bandcamp

Yo chooms!
Bandcamp Friday is here again - the one day where the whole cut goes straight to the artist instead of getting eaten up along the way.
So I figured I'd make it worth your while: use the code "cyber" at checkout and everything digital in my shop is 90% off. Grab one track, pull the entire catalogue onto your cyberdeck, whatever you feel like. It's all yours to keep, DRM-free, offline, forever.

This one lands at a good moment for me, too. I've got a surgery coming up that I'm partly covering myself. Nothing dramatic - but knowing there are people out there still listening makes it a whole lot easier. Whatever you load up today is part of that.
Thank you
Sure enough, not only am I completely unfamiliar with this song I also have no idea who the performers are. It’s funny how little incidental exposure to popular music I get since I no longer work in an office, or travel there in public transport.
I am psyched to announce last night I finished a new song.
"Welcome To 2025" is the hard-hitting opening track to SECTOR 1, my immersive, empathy-driven #antifascist #art project.
It is now available on #SoundCloud. The link is below.

NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist
There will be no next week! Because we'll be at @dwcon and I'm far too lazy to pre-record a show.
But...
ON THE 17TH OF AUGUST ON #ThePlaylist...
Yet another guest theme, this time from @RealAleRocks and Ben Gray, who, because they're drug dealers or they work in a pharmacy or something, would like to suggest:
Pharmacy
A terribly difficult one, I know, as there are basically no songs about drugs. HOWEVER, they're ACTUALLY asking for songs about a pharmacy. So bear that in mind.
Or not. Whatever. I'm not your mum.
Dispense your suggestions this way with #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and with any luck we'll get high on our own supply.

We're off to Discworld Con this weekend, so the theme for this week's edition of #ThePlaylist is:
The Discworld
Songs about wizards, and flying turtles, and DEATH, and THE DEATH OF RATS, will abound. Or just songs about discs, or worlds. Are there any flat Earth bangers?
#TheArchive - https://djdarren.site/archive/podcast/theplaylist-116-the-discworld/
Listen! Enjoy! Tell all your friend!

In just ONE CIRCULAR HOUR, the return of #ThePlaylist
We're off to Discworld Con this weekend, so it's only fair that the theme should be:
The Discworld
Songs about wizards, and flying turtles, and DEATH, and THE DEATH OF RATS, will abound. Or just songs about discs, or worlds. Are there any flat Earth bangers?

It's the familiar tale of those irresistible cosmopolitan beats being impossible to shake off, here enhanced with some sharp lyrics from Irving Caesar to match the surprisingly sophisticated melody, which became a swing standard after debuting in the musical comedy, "Here's Howe!"
Johnny Marvin, eschewing the use of his many pseudonyms for this outing, does the honours with a lively recording:

to be honest, currently the situation is not great as Ardour doesn't work (or at least it didn't last time I tried it, which was about 8 months ago). There are just slightly less plugins than on Linux, but I see that changing every few months (thank you yuri@). As I really don't like how none of the existing open-source DAWs work, I started developing my own: https://maolan.rs and the latest version is in ports (probably need to wait few days for it to be in packages). I can talk about it for hours, but who wants to listen 😃 Anyway, my wish it is to develop professional #audio and #music production DAW and the way I did it is asking AI what makes different open source and proprietary solutions stand out, picked my list of features and implemented them. People on github had some more suggestions which I implemented and people like @ianthetechie "forced" me to make it more stable by pointing me in the direction of lockelss Rust structures, for which I'm eternally grateful. As latest version published all the features I wanted Maolan to have and finally fixed Windows playback bug, I will continue work on Maolan plugins and https://doc.maolan.rs besides fixing bugs that I find or other people report. As always, I need feedback and comments on how to improve and what I've missed. Oh yes, and @dch gave me access to ARM machine, so I fixed the build on that architecture, which I forgot and FreeBSD currently doesn't build it for ARM
I finally made https://maolan.rs on Windows work at least on my machine, so new version is published. That version also removed my hackish way of handling real time with proper lockless structures, and I added Live Session view looking similar to Ableton Live. There's still a lot of work to be done but #audio and #music production using #opensource has never been more fun.
In the future I intend to work on plugins to make DAW more complete. Maolan already supports CLAP, LV2 and VST3, so you can load plugins, but I want to develop some of my own.

A rare published songwriting credit for Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards, but not a song he seems to have recorded. The best known version is by Art Fowler, which features his artful ukulele playing, but the performance I've linked to is by Edith Clifford, as it sticks a little more closely to the sheet music and includes the second verse.
It's a bird! It's a plane! No! It's #ThePlaylist
This week we have another guest theme, this time from @FloatingOnion who flew in (without a cape) to ask for songs about:
Heroes
He wanted to hear YOUR most heroic tunes. He wanted to hear songs that'll save people from a hijacked passenger jet, or have the ability to leave the last chocolate Hob Nob in the packet. He wanted songs that were strong, and fast, and fresh from the fight, and by golly, he got 'em.

NEXT WEEK on #ThePlaylist
I'm off to Discworld Con in a couple of weeks, so next week I think it's only fair that the theme should be:
The Discworld
Songs about wizards, and flying turtles, and DEATH, and THE DEATH OF RATS, will abound. Or just songs about discs, or worlds. Are there any flat Earth bangers?
Sling them this way using #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and together we'll spend two hours attempting to make the memory of Sir Pterry proud.

for my musical accompaniment, which worked pretty well, tho some of the hip-hop contrasted badly with the trancey stuff. LTJ Bukem is right in the middle, that's good for it.
