I agree. I actually like a lot of things about Mastodon, but it's too big a player in this space, and all the various fedi server projects need to be better at interoperability.

For example, you can't reply to a #GoToSocial comment from #Pixelfed, because the #GtS user won't get any context, and won't know what you're replying to. This was a bug reported a good while back, and AFAIK there still hasn't been a fix, although they've done many other things to improve Pixelfed since then.

That's... unfortunate and unneccesary. Implicitly saying "as long as it works with #Mastodon, it's fine" isn't the way to a healthy #fediverse.

Weekend project that turned into infra I actually run daily: MastoSum.

The stack: RHEL host, 100% rootless Podman. Web on FastAPI, Celery worker/beat/flower, PostgreSQL 16, Valkey. All on userspace networking (pasta), images built & shipped by a self-hosted Forgejo runner. No root daemon, no privileged anything.

What it does: tracks technical hashtags all day and produces one daily briefing, every point linked to the original post + author. It reads only public hashtag timelines, credits every source, and trains on nothing.

And yes, an LLM writes the prose: a local Ministral model from French lab Mistral AI, running on my own hardware. No cloud, nothing leaving the box. Saying that plainly, not burying it. The whole design goal was to point readers *back* at the authors, not replace reading them.

yesterday I caught an #AI bot being used to send #marketing replies to anyone discussing solar power infrastructure.

The admins of the instance yoinked the bot account very quickly indeed, and I'm not sure what whoever was running it hoped to achieve, although I do wonder if they were simply using #Fediverse as their test resource before they tried it in production (so this is something all #FediAdmins will have to keep a sharp eye out for)
