sapka.pl is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
#Lazyweb When I want to spin up my own #Fediverse instance that supports #Markdown when composing a post and that can handle my significant amount of followers with a seamless migration from my current #Mastodon instance, which #ActivityPub Implementation would you use? Ideally it should be a simple rootless container setup that JustWorks™ with podman. Perfection would be a single, self-contained container without the need to spin up several ones for databases or other stuff.
Mastodon 4.6 finally has a real profile redesign, and most of it is the quiet, useful kind of update I'd been hoping for.
They ran a survey about which info people actually want on a profile, then rebuilt the layout around the answers. Featured hashtags moved to the front. You can set a viewing preference once, original posts only or everything including boosts and replies, and it sticks across every profile you visit. I've wanted this for a long time.
The bigger change is editing. It happens in place now, on the profile page itself. No bouncing to Settings to swap an avatar. You can crop your profile picture and header right there in Mastodon, something that should have shipped years ago. You can finally add alt text to both. That one got me. Blind and low-vision users have been navigating a feed of mystery avatars this entire time, and the Dutch government funded a chunk of the accessibility work. Good for them.
The three new tab toggles are smaller but worth knowing about. You can hide Media entirely, or keep it visible but exclude attachments from replies. That's the one that makes using Mastodon as a portfolio actually viable. The Featured tab (where Collections live) can be hidden too.
If you self-host: the theming system changed. Custom themes need updates because the team converted everything to design tokens and CSS variables. Probably the right call long-term; definitely a chore for anyone with bespoke styling.
Want to make your own fediverse Starter Pack? Here's how Collections work in Mastodon 4.6.
First, one prerequisite: Both you and every account you add need "Feature profile and posts in discovery algorithms" turned on in account settings. No opt-in, no inclusion. This is the abuse-prevention foundation — you can't be added to anything you haven't consented to.
To create a collection:
From your Mastodon home page, hit the new Collections option, and then click New Collection.
Fill in: name, short description, a topic hashtag, language, Public or Unlisted visibility. There's also a Sensitive toggle that hides the description and accounts behind a content warning.
Add accounts by handle. Each one has to be opted into discovery, and they all get a notification the moment you add them.
Publish. Share the link anywhere — your profile's Featured tab picks it up automatically.
The cap is 25 accounts per collection. Deliberately small. Bluesky's 150-account Starter Packs got gamed with spam padding, and industry research suggests the sweet spot for follow-through is 25–80. Starting low and raising later is easier than the reverse.
What the people you add see:
A notification with a link to the collection, a view of the full list, and a one-click "remove me." If you later edit the title or description, every member is notified again — no sneaky edits.
What they don't get: a "follow all" button. Every follow is intentional. Same anti-abuse reasoning.
For developers:
New REST endpoints under /api/v1/collections — GET, POST, PATCH, DELETE, plus add/remove account actions. Built on FEP-7aa9 so other fediverse software can implement it. Full reference at docs.joinmastodon.org.
The catch: this is v1. There's no browse/discover view yet — that ships after critical mass of community collections exists. Sharing is manual for now: post the link, send it to friends, drop it in your Featured tab.
Mastodon 4.6 just shipped.
Headline: Collections — shareable curated lists of up to 25 accounts for newcomers, with real abuse prevention. Accounts can only be added if they've opted into "Feature me in discovery experiences," get notified on add, can remove themselves any time, and are notified again on title or description edits. No "follow all" shortcut — every account has to be evaluated individually, which kills the spam-padding trick. Built on FEP-7aa9 for fediverse interop.
Sleeper hit: email subscriptions. Admins can let specific roles turn their public posts into mailing lists, so creators reach readers who'll never make a fediverse account. Off by default — sending email blows up server costs — but it's a growth lever none of the other fediverse platforms have shipped.
Profile screen got a redesign from a community survey. Editing happens in place: crop avatars and headers right there, no pre-cropping in another app. Alt text for profile pics and headers is finally supported. New tab controls let you hide the Media tab, or stop it including replies — handy if you want a portfolio tab without the GIFs you reply with.
For admins: the new overview landing page targets institutional setups (EU Commission, German government) where trending posts aren't the right front page. There's now an option to require 2FA for specific roles, including Everybody. Wrapstodon year-in-review is revamped and auto-generates Dec 10–31 if enabled.
Accessibility got serious attention: keyboard nav, focus management, color contrast, screen readers. The Dutch government sponsored a chunk of that work, a nice model for public sector funding of open source.
@EUCommission then why not rather supporting #mastodon and the #fediverse rather than that weird W closed, proprietary, for profit thing?
@mhthaung @small_cypress @kedara
I'm a big fan of hashtags, as they're the best way to find stuff on the #Fediverse.
We do technically have search, but it's prett opt-in, and not universal.
#Hashtags are still the best, because they're explicit. You're declaring to the fediverse what parts of your posts you really want to be found. :)
Cheers! 🍻
P.S., Apologies for the mansplainy tone 🤦♂️. I didn't realize you've been on here for a while. I'mma do better.
Explain the difference between these two like I'm eleven years old.

I love that on the regular internet, you can be like "I need to find out what part this is on my 2025 car" and all the results you get back are for car rentals, people trying to sell you a car, trying to buy your car, or AI slop videos explaining to you what a car is in the least intelligible way possible.
But... in the #Fediverse you can be like "anybody know the correct wiring layout and voltages for a 1974 "Passion-o-Meter" novelty Love Tester from Hanlon Amusements in Fairbanks, Alabama? I found one while doing recreational free diving in a cave system in Peru and I'm trying to put it back together again" and not only does NOBODY question any part of the insane statement made, but three people who happen to specialize in that exact sort of thing immediately emerge from the woodwork like the reverse of Homer Simpson going into the hedge.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to migrate mail services OFF NameCheap? Namely their Jellyfish/MS Outlook365 integration thingy cleanly?
Someone I know asked me about this and I'm unsure how to migrate mail off of NameCheap but they still want to retain the Microsoft stuff.
Migrating off of Microsoft is not really an option for them (their business requires it). Any ideas?
Please boost if possible. Thanks so much #fediverse !

The concentration of power in Silicon Valley happened partly because we let it. We accepted a few platforms as inevitable. We built our communities there because that’s where everyone was. It wasn’t because their technology is better. It was a choice—made again and again by the people on those platforms, by investors, and by policymakers.
A different choice is possible, but it requires that those of us building alternatives actually believe what we say about cooperation. It means assuming good faith from people building different projects. It means investing in infrastructure that doesn’t benefit us alone.
We, the builders of the open social web, are the only ones who can make that choice.
It starts with deciding that our mission matters more than winning alone.

Honestly, the only reason I can come up with for Brussels not daring to build and run its own ActivityPub server where EU citizens can follow what their reps are up to is that they don't trust their own people … which, yeah, sounds about right.
Welcome to the #Fediverse! (That's what we call the larger network that #Mastodon is on, just FYI)
Your bio is a good start, now put out some posts so that the people you follow will know a little more about what you're all about, and will be more likely to follow you back.
Cheers, and have fun! ;)
New masto-fe:
++ better dark hi-contrast mode.
++ 1-7 focus columns don't move to the top, 0 does! You can keyboard-warrior it! jk work fine.
+ alt text being 10K should help a lot, when I post whole textbook pages.
-- column scroll bars are narrower. They do look more readable even without my stupidcomments.css hacks.
-- left column is just as obnoxious as ever, my hacks are still needed.
@EUCommission
No thanks, why would I?
We're here. It's good and even better.
You chould strengthen the #fediverse by using it. There's no need for another split platform.
@EUCommission #Fediverse with #Mastodon is all I need. Can't imagine (now) that I will register to another social media network out of the Fediverse for fun again.
Sorry, I even will not take a look.
#Mastodon 4.6 is here! It's been a long time in the works, but it's finally ready. In this release, we're introducing Collections—a way to share curated collections of profiles to help old and new users discover more of the #Fediverse. We're also updating the look of profiles, alongside many quality of life and accessibility improvements. Read more here:

“My fear is that W Social is just another for-profit Big Tech startup that happens to be based in the EU. We don’t need that. We don’t need more European surveillance capitalists and people farmers. We need ethical alternatives working for the common good.”
– Yours truly, in @_elena’s excellent expose on W Social.
Do read the article to the end, especially noting the bit about the composition of their board of advisors, which includes an ex-Google AI lead and an ex-Paypal Chief [Violate Your] Privacy Officer who now works at Tools for Humanity (Sam Altman’s “Sci-fi dystopia? Hold my beer…” identity farming startup that wants to scan your eyeballs).

Thank you @rationaldoge for including this in your post this morning. I wanted to reshare it for all the #DogsOfMastodon fans in the #fediverse!
I just noticed that a #bot with the following user agent is crawling the #fediverse:
Mozilla/5.0+(compatible; FediralBot/1.0; https://www.fediral.com/bot)
They do not explain why they're doing this, the website just says "Launching soon!". I've blocked them for now.
Mastodon 4.6 (RC) is rolling out, and it's a big one. We've already upgraded toot.community, so everything in this thread is live for you right now. Here's what's new for the whole fediverse. 🧵
First up: Collections. Group up to 25 accounts into a list and share it with anyone. Good for pointing people at the folks you follow on a given topic. It works across the fediverse too, not just here.
@davidallengreen a group of teenagers under 16 could set up their own mastodon server and NOT federated, just like anyone else.
Just them and their friends.
burningboard.net now runs on Mastodon v4.6.0 (Release Candidate)
What's new for you:
- Collections: Curate up to 25 accounts and share them with others
- Redesigned profiles: edit yours directly, no settings panel needed
- Email subscriptions: turn your public posts into a mailing list (opt-in)
- Alt text for avatars & headers
- Posts can now have media AND a poll
- New color scheme + contrast options
Enjoy!

We've moved away from Cloudflare Tunnel. It was convenient, but Cloudflare sits in the middle of your traffic, and that bothered us enough to do something about it.
We're now running Pangolin on a BDIX-connected VPS to expose our services. If you're in Bangladesh, you should notice things feeling snappier.

This week I spoke to a room full of non-techy NGO people and for the first time there were more folks with #Fediverse than #Threads accounts in the room 🎉
UK politicians and the government should lead by example.
If they're serious about reducing the influence of harmful social platforms, they should engage with citizens in federated spaces, rather than Musk's rage-fuelled machine.
A healthier Internet is possible, if we only choose to build it.
