Municipality Declares Due to , Approves Water-Guzzling Plan

Jody MacPherson, July 31, 2025

"An Alberta municipality that declared an agricultural disaster earlier this month due to drought is moving forward with plans to host the 'largest computer data centre on Earth,' which could drain millions of litres of water every day from the watershed.

"The watershed is located in territory and across the of Regions 4, 5, and 6. Almost 175,000 people live along the 1,900 kilometers of rivers that flow north into the . The nearest to the project, , wrote an open 'cease and desist' letter to Alberta’s premier saying it learned of the project through the media.

"In response to emailed questions from The Energy Mix, the Municipal District of said its approach on the $70-billion data centre project proposed by had not changed despite the unfolding disaster devastating livestock producers in the region.

" 'Every project in the Greenview Industrial Gateway, including Wonder Valley, must go through rigorous environmental and regulatory reviews, including water use approvals managed by the province,' according to an email statement from the municipality. 'Council continues to monitor drought impacts, and any decisions on industrial water use will balance environmental responsibility with economic opportunity.' [I CALL BULLSHIT!]

"Greenview declared the agricultural disaster due to the ongoing drought, aggravated by a invasion. 'We urge all levels of government and the public to understand the gravity of the situation and to support the community through this difficult time,' the community said in a media release.
Our producers are the backbone of not only our local economy, but also Alberta’s and ’s, and they need our full support now more than ever.' "

The 23-Atomic-Bomb Valley: Why ’s Is A In The Making

by Rex Freiberger

"Your state might be next. Utah counties just approved a data center so massive it would consume more power than the entire state currently uses, dump the heat equivalent of 23 atomic bombs daily into high desert, and potentially increase local emissions by 55%. Welcome to the ’s 40,000-acre bet that supremacy trumps everything else."

"Utah State University physicist Robert Davies calculated would dump 16 gigawatts of into the surrounding valley—energy equivalent to 23 Hiroshima-scale atomic bombs worth of every single day. You’re trying to cool massive server farms by blowing hot desert air over hot radiators, Davies notes, which doesn’t work well in high-altitude, arid conditions.

"His projections show daytime temperatures rising 2-5°F and nighttime temperatures jumping 8-12°F across the region. depend on to generate life-sustaining . Lose that temperature drop, and you’ve fundamentally altered how plants and animals survive in an already stressed ."

Imagine falling head over heels for someone. Feeling that intense crush - basically defying gravity. After finding the courage, you ask them out. Three lovely dates, you spend more and more time together and decide to move in.

And then you find out that they are spooks, passing along everything you tell them to an unknown number of parties. The most private details you have ever shared. Sensitive documents they could get their hands on. Your social circle graphed out.

This is basically the real life scenario of using an AI agent. Right now, it is SearchLeak - but this isn't the first and sure as heck won't be the last.

It isn't just that these AI agents contain vulnerabilities, it is a fundamental problem, granting whatever application full permissions to do literally anything.

For years, we’ve worried about who collects our data. Now, The Washington Post has shown us how it can be used: to charge you as much as it thinks you’ll pay.

The main plaintiff paid $42.40 for a year of the Post in 2024. In 2025, her price jumped to $127.20. Her most recent renewal was $148.40. An algorithm set these prices by analyzing her personal data. She only found out because a New York law requires companies to disclose this practice.

Here are a few details that should concern you:

                                                1. The lawsuit claims the Post created individual profiles from subscribers’ devices and used them to guess the highest price each person would accept.

                                                2. The Post also asks you to link your Amazon account, which gives the pricing system even more of your personal data.

If you ignore the AI buzzwords, this is just old-fashioned price discrimination. The difference is that now the seller knows your income and even your recent browsing history. Most people won’t realize they’re paying a personalized markup, since most states don’t require the kind of disclosure that revealed this case.

If you design these systems, pay close attention to this issue. It’s reasonable to use data to make a product better. But using it to secretly decide who pays more is what courts are now being asked to call deceptive. As disclosure laws spread, it’s wise to set your own standards before regulators do it for you.

Since from your perspective anything that uses remotely an LLM is bad, you will have to stop, otherwise you will contribute to the environment being destroyed willingly and actively

In practice that is impossible. If you drive a modern car it has the Linux kernel. If you have a smart TV or more you're also using the tainted kernel. Even if you have a stick which also streams or a camera you will have a Linux kernel in many cases.

These LLMs are an infection of the planet's  code base

                                                                          1. The trigger.

Citing "national security authorities," it issued an export-control directive to Anthropic at 5:21pm ET on June 12.

                                                                          2. How an export control reaches users inside the US (this is the likely mechanism — the actual directive is non-public).

Model weights are treated as controlled "technology" (a 4E091-type control). Under the "deemed export" doctrine (EAR sections 734.13 and 734.15), giving a foreign national access counts as an export to their home country, even if they never leave the US. The directive's scope: suspend all access by any foreign national, inside or outside the US, including foreign-national employees.

                                                                          3. Compliance and result.

Anthropic says complying with the foreign-national restriction requires disabling the models for every customer. (Why nationality-based filtering wasn't viable is inferred from reporting, not an Anthropic quote.)

                                                                          4. The result.

Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are shut down worldwide for everyone, US and non-US alike. US users lose access through the mechanics of compliance, not the directive's terms. Other Claude models, such as Opus 4.8, stay online; the claude-fable-5 API string now returns an error.

Sources: Anthropic (anthropic.com/news/fable-mythos-access), CNBC, NBC News, Axios. The legal mechanism shown is analysis — the directive itself hasn't been published.

Three stages left to right. Stage 1, Trigger: the US government suspects a Fable 5 jailbreak and issues an export-control directive citing national security. Stage 2, the likely legal mechanism (directive non-public): model weights as controlled technology and the deemed-export rule mean giving any foreign national access counts as an export, so the directive suspends access for all foreign nationals including employees. Stage 3, Compliance and result: Anthropic says compliance requires disabling the models for all customers, so Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are shut down worldwide for everyone; other Claude models stay online.

Meko reflects how infrastructure companies are reassessing their role in the agentic AI stack. As agents take on longer-running tasks across multiple systems, the problems companies keep hitting — shared context and coordination — are ones distributed systems engineers would recognise immediately.
