Another thread on the FreeBSD forum about avoiding slop. Free’s dragging its feet on a slop policy & has accepted a few slop commits, so it’s clear which way the wind’s blowing.
Slop huggers are there, calling people who want working software that isn’t stolen terrorists & McCarthyites. Lolz. They’re on a list alright, but it’s a different Joseph.
NetBSD’s the only slopfree BSD now. A few Linuxes but the kernel’s gone, well, better than nothing. The Alpine news is a kick in the nuts.
Time to post some #GRiD #Compass photos!
This laptop was presented in our local #hackspace by a guy who bought him to use, but found that there are no easy way to install programs, transfer files, use GRiD Compass emulator on PC, connect this laptop to the network — so he started working and solving beforementioned problems A LOT — as usual for anyone who is deeply in retrocomputing

Special dithered photos for @rl_dane
🤤
I LOVE dithering and monochrome graphics, man!
What program did you use to make the images?
@rl_dane Just a Gimp
1-bit pallete (black and white) plus Floyd-Steinberg dithering
@evgandr Love the dithering on the photos. Did you use a special filter with your phonecam or was it indeed an old digital camera?
@Datassette_User No, it was a modern enough Olympus OM-D E-Mark-II with telelens and 1bit color pallete with a Floyd-Steinberg dithering in the #GIMP during the postprocess
GenAI work good enough. They don't need to be any better to be usable in hands of people who learn how to use them. It's irrelevant if it makes mistakes or lies . What is relevant is the cost: social, ecological, our impeding economical disaster. It doesn't matter how good they are or if they will improve. The cost is unacceptable and this technology has no right to exit. Focusing on the shortcomings of them as product - a millionth example it it counting letters incorrectly, or that drive to the wash example - is not the way to go. It's funny, but it's just playing their game: it's technical problem, it can be fixed in the next iteration. Jut a few more billion dollars, just half a year. Meanwhile the actual problems emerging with GenAI being present everywhere are shunned of. Have you read Antropic reply to Pope? They have nothing to address any non-technical problem. They don't even have a framework to even think about it, because that's not where the discussion is. VCs don't ask, press doesn't ask, and we just focus on some random tidbit on Google. Look at our shiny benchmark, forget about the CO2 we are generating.
This commentary on Eric Schmidt's ill-received commencement speech at University of Arizona is spot on:
https://youtu.be/tlQ7EoJDTQY
It is a thoughtful, stern public call-out of a man who had all the power and opportunity to make the right, ethical decisions at Google, but didn't – and who now demands that students inhabiting the technofascist dystopia he helped create go in and fix it.
The booing at that commencement speech was a rare and much-needed moment of accountability for Schmidt.🔥
@rysiek oh yes! This is the type of thing that we need. More accountability for the people who actively screwed things up, while cos-playing as thoughtful and morally upstanding people.
Very good commentary.
@rysiek Accountability would be the stripping of all his wealth to help fix the problems he caused. This was at most temporary discomfort and inconvenience for him.
But there are also articles only the author could have written. Ones that come from personal experience, ones written in their distinct style. It's no longer "how to do this thing" or "how is this thing". Again, I feel no need to write them. What I want to write is things about me - so the shift to "how did I that thing". A more personal web. Ruben has his style (which is a 4 letter sentence), Tim has an amazing intro on how to use Mail, and so on. Those sites and texts are distinctly their. I hope there will be less orange-site style texts written, which you could copy to any other site (or even yahoo) and not even notice. More MWL, less O'Reily.
As a complete side note: I try to write better technically.
IMHO "small web" will become more hermetized (due to decreasing interest in reading and learning) and more exotic. And I do not think that this will encourage people to write more, whom they will be writing to?

Married! (Only took us… 12 years?!) 🎉
Long story short, I just ordered 6 bottles of Obello Bianco Malvasia as The Wife considers it now to be the greatest thing since pizza. I now an participant in AA wine culture.
Every marriage has one person who reports whenever a celebrity dies and one person who says, “Oh.”
@michal What to you use for your bookmarks? Just the ones that are build into the browser? I found them really hard to manage.
@michal I remember those days. For me, watching Discovery Channel’s “Terra X” was peak childhood/early teenage years. Anything with early humans or Earth’s geologic history was perfect.
@michal I recently saw a documentary about the possible reason of a Mayan city collapse, it was definitely plausible. There was basically a micro climate change which reduced the water levels in their aquifer, and the upper crust of society basically poisoned their only source of water because they dumped their leftover food into a well. That food would then start to rot and breakdown, leading to terrible water conditions.
@michal My two favorites, which are hard to find, are James Burke's "Connections" (science history), and Jacob Bronowski (the rise of human civilization).
I keep looking for DVD's of "The Body in Question", by Jonathan Miller, but so far I've had no luck.
I haven't seen this one, but it sounds good. I'll check it out over the weekend.
boostedAfter 34 years together, Liz and I are getting divorced. This is an amicable split, everyone behaved completely honorably, and we remain friends. We are working together to make sure we both have a solid start in the next phase of our lives.
All new projects are delayed. While I appreciate invitations, I will not be attending events until the process is complete.
The next few months will be very stressful for us both. I ask for your patience and understanding.
Thank you.
[ETA: Rats are going with me. Lawyers are involved, so I have no further comment.]
[ETA again: OK, I do have further comment:
I'm not interested in ripping on my wife.
We are separating with mutual compassion.
Getting angry only makes things worse. There's no reason for it or benefit in it.
Rage is easy, compassion is hard.]
@mwl Damn, I'm sorry. Even if it's amicable, it's still hard.
@mwl I'm so sorry to hear that. And I wish you both comfort and kindness as you find your way forward.
@mwl I'm really sorry to hear this. I hope the process goes as smoothly as possible for you 🙏
@mwl You have my sympathies. I've been through my own divorce. I found a good lawyer, by which I mean someone who didn't try to start fights so they could make more money. And he was able to arrange things in a way that solved two of my moral dilemmas without causing any issues for her.
But there were tears, nonetheless.
@mwl if it’s going to happen, that’s the way you want it to. I’m sorry you’re both having to go through with it, but hope you both get the solid start you need.
@mwl Sorry to hear that. I'm in the same process right now, even if we've only been together for 28 years, so I know what you're going through. It's tough even when it's amicable.
@mwl 🥺I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Good luck to both of you 🫂
@mwl Sorry to hear. Good luck and will see you in the future on the other side of this.
@mwl Awww, shit. Sorry to hear.
Wishing the best for both of you during this difficult time. ❤️🩹
@mwl You posted a couple weeks ago about negative stuff and I really hoped it wasn't something like this 💔 Sending strength your way, I know you will get through it.
@mwl ah sorry my friend. Have a big hug, take care.
@mwl Very sorry to read this, best of luck - especially for the coming months. Speaking from experience, it will get better, but it will take time.
@mwl So sorry to hear this. The transition will be very hard under the best circumstances. I'm confident that you will emerge into a new, better era before too long.
@mwl Sorry you're going through this. I hope everything turns out for the best and with the least amount of stress possible.
Okay, so the general vibe here is less 'Hooray, new model!' and more 'Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't take away Opus 4.6'.Guess the vibe on the vibe island if significantly off.the consensus is overwhelmingly skeptical, bordering on hostile. The community is clearly still traumatized by the Opus 4.7 update, which most users consider a massive downgrade. The news that 4.8 "builds on 4.7" has gone down like a lead balloon.
The Cult of 4.6: Everyone is terrified of losing access to Opus 4.6, the subreddit's beloved gold standard. Many are reporting it's already gone from their model list, while others can still access it, causing widespread panic and threats to switch to competitors.
Token Terror: The number one concern after losing 4.6 is how fast 4.8 will incinerate usage limits. Early reports are not comforting, with users claiming it's even more token-hungry than 4.7, rendering the Pro plan a "sampler" at best.
Benchmark Blues: Nobody trusts the benchmark charts. The phrase "trust me bro" has been thrown around a lot, with users pointing out that 4.7 also had a pretty graph before it disappointed everyone.
Sonnet & Haiku Neglect: A significant number of users wish Anthropic would focus on improving the cheaper models instead of another incremental Opus release, especially given the cost concerns.
>A few brave souls are reporting positive initial results, saying it feels like a fixed 4.7, but they are a tiny island in a vast ocean of doubt. The rest of the thread is basically a support group for people who miss the good old days of Opus 4.6.
This is in line with my understand: models are stagnated, and most improvement is from work on harnesses. And they can't do it without burning even more tokens.
@michal this is the perfect occasion to use the "oh no anyway" meme
@michal i find it funny how the models development basically stagnated since i stopped using them so i don’t have to check the new ones to know their weaknesses and strengths
@michal glad to see someone else doing ssr and appreciating routines. my recent spike of a 13mb fediverse client in go used some of this approach. i'm still testing it, but so far it's working quite nicely.
what are you building in go? also any movies that you're enjoying currently?
and no, I'm not watching anything. It's Children of Dune all night through.
@michal sounds like a great project. i got tired of hugo and made a minimal generator too. took some lessons from the bssg project @stefano worked on, but this was specific tooling to learn with.
sounds like a good read. i've been going through some older philosophy books to try to disconnect a bit. it's pretty nice to read again :-)
@michal I should like Go, since it was designed by people I respect. But it's *Google*, so I automatically refuse to use it, or say anything nice about it at all. I'm not sure how Go manages to steal all your personal data and sell it, but it's Google so it *must* be doing that.
And if it doesn't now, it will be soon.
(And some people tell me I'm being paranoid...)
@michal They may still have that. I dropped them in 2000, when I found them actively thwarting my privacy settings.
So now I am not permitted to admit they do anything good. ;)
I hold a grudge.
@brie

@michal accounts are moved in batches and some instances aren't always online. Some other will eventually move. Some others probably are dead instances' accounts.
Finally some good tech news? #LastFM is now independent again.

God damn it. Firefighting?! US, go home. You're embarrassing yourself.

@SamuraiSakura I love following your offline journey, and I am also ready to ditch RSS. My last elfeed update pulled 327 items and it's not manageable.
How do you now follow blogs? Whenever you remember the url, a bookmark, some other cool way?
@mms An alternative to ditching RSS is to switch to an RSS reader that doesn't encourage you to read absolutely everything. There is the so-called "river of news" paradigm that gives you a single reverse chronological stream of posts without unread counta and where the older posts gradually disappear. @SamuraiSakura
@mms Bookmark and check them at least once a week. It’s nice to see everyone’s personalities come through their blog styles.
@mms @SamuraiSakura I have 300-500 new posts each day. Most of it is Mastodon. I read everything. 🙈
@jak2k @SamuraiSakura That's a non-stop grind at this point ;p
@mms @SamuraiSakura Yes, but it's not that bad. Mastodon posts are short of very fast to go through.
The big problem are rather the 700 posts that are marked as unread but practically are bookmarks.
Follow my future account to be the first to see it!
It's hot as hell, but I'm no longer dying. It's not pleasant (16C is perfect), but it's not worthy of being annoyed even.
Fight Club
Space Jam
Silence of the Lambs
ok, ok. What the hell is going on? The CEO idea is "people want to see the same thing a 1000th time" and not "people want to see new things like this"? They make new movies. If they stopped - I get it. But they do. There's a He-Man movie, but I'm no longer 6. I'd see a new movie like Silence of the Lambs - TV series are not it.
@michal The theater near me has been showing some past movies, too. Currently it's:
- The Big Lebowsky
- Trainspotting
- The Mask

@michal And now you know what "Wayne's World" really was. A couple of guys with a public access show. ;)
@michal @onepict You never saw 'Wayne's World' (1992)?* I would have expected that to have been many people's introduction — if they understood the context, I guess. 🤔
* I acknowledge that not watching any one of the litany of SNL spin-off movies is entirely defensible; some of them have been truly awful. 😂
"I'm not worthy" is a direct quote from it (or the sequel). I never understood the context until now. It was just a funny movie, I never wondered how they got a TV programme.
