This is a range of my favorite histories of the science fiction genre -- and its pre-history. I did not include any monographs on single SF authors or ultra-focused studies. There are a handful I could not find (hiding in a pile or in a corner of a shelf) that I wanted to include.

From L to R starting at the top: Clareson's Some Kind of Paradise, Cheng's Astounding Wonder, Nevala-Lee's Astounding, Westfahl's The Mechanics of Wonder, Abnet's The American Robot, Butler's Solar Flares,Seed's A Companion to Science Fiction, Davin's Partner's in Wonder, Foertsch's Reckoning Day, Zamalin's Black Utopia, Link and Canavan's American Science Fiction, Sharp's Dawionian Feminism and Early Science Fiction,Three Ashley Volumes on the History of SF magazines, Yaszek's Galactic Suburbia,Hammon's Cold war Stories: British Dystopian Fiction, James and Mendlesohn's Science Fiction

Today in Labor History June 21, 1877: Ten Irish miners, all union activists & allegedly members of the terrorist Molly Maguires, were hanged in Pennsylvania in The Day of the Rope. It was the second largest mass execution in U.S. history. (The largest was in 1862, when the U.S. government executed 38 Dakota warriors). However, most of the evidence, including claims of membership in the Molly Maguires, came from an agent provocateur, James McParland, who worked for the Pinkertons, on behalf of the mine owners, and who helped plan and carry out many of the murders that were blamed on miners. Nearly everything people “know” today about the Molly Maguires comes from Allan Pinkerton’s work of fiction, “The Molly Maguires and the Detectives” (1877), which he marketed as nonfiction. His heavily biased book was the primary source for dozens of academic works, and for several pieces of fiction, including Arthur Conan Doyle’s final Sherlock Holmes novel, “Valley of Fear” (1915), and the 1970 Sean Connery film, “Molly Maguires.” McParland later helped frame Big Bill Haywood for the murder of Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg. And he was the lead Pinkerton during the Colorado Labor Wars (1903-1904), when scores of union miners were beaten, imprisoned, deported, and/or murdered. McParland and the Molly Maguires play prominently in my novel, “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” and in the sequel, “Red Hot Summer in the Big Smoke,” which I’m currently working on.

Transdisciplinary Research Across Knowledge Worlds: Beyond Parallel Universes by Stanley D. Brunn, Springer 2026

This book argues that the time has come to embrace transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and research as essential to addressing today’s complex challenges.

          link.springer.com/book/10.1007

It traces the shift from rigid “silo” thinking toward integrated approaches that connect sciences, humanities, and applied fields such as health, environmental policy, and technology. Drawing on cutting-edge scholarship, it explores emerging intersections and conceptual frameworks that redefine concepts of place, landscape, networks, welfare, and wellbeing. The book also explores tensions between global interconnectedness and persistent social, economic, and political divides, offering insights into how scholars can navigate and bridge these worlds.

Essential reading for scholars, educators, and advanced students seeking to navigate and contribute to the evolving landscape of interdisciplinary research.

"Cosmic Laughter" (1974) is a collection of some wonderfully funny short science fiction stories. It was one of my daily recommendations a few weeks ago: kolektiva.social/@Quasit/11668

            R. Bretnor wrote a lot of very funny short science fiction too. "The Schimmelhorn File" (1979) is a collection of short stories about a Swiss janitor who is a genius—but only in his subconscious. Fair warning, Papa Schimmelhorn starts out as a dirty old man and just gets worse and worse. It can be a little cringy.

            archive.org/details/schimmelho

Another character who's a genius only in his subconscious (and generally wakes up from a bender with mysterious inventions that he doesn't understand) is Henry Kuttner's Galloway Gallagher. Many Gallagher stories were collected in "Robots Have No Tails" (1952).

Gallagher is, I should note, an alcoholic.

Books are so great, man. A good book is not only communication between people through space and time; it’s a gourmet meal (or at least a decent dinner and dessert), prepared for your maximum enjoyment and enlightenment. Just think: someone—a team of people even—spent months or years structuring their ideas, editing their words, writing, rearranging, rewriting—all so you can receive their thoughts in the most pleasant and fruitful way! What privilege! What incredible joy!

It’s always refreshing to read a good book after spending time on social media, to consume substantial, sustained, structured words with a beginning and a destination, instead of a collection of disconnected, hastily-written thoughts, which—don’t get me wrong—are great and fun in their own way! But books: oh man, that’s the good stuff. I don’t visit them as often as I should.

The writers don’t just sign them mechanically, but chat with each reader. Often, they personalise the inscription. The queue never gets restless. People happily chat about books as they wait their turn. I fangirl-gushed at Lucy Caldwell and instead of calling security, she chatted with me about our mutual love of short stories, then wrote this generous inscription.
