This is my new, future account. While most interaction still happen on the bsd.cafe one, I aim to migrate fully here.

I am posting mostly culture, emacs, bsd and anti-ai based ramblings. I don't curse and I try not bait people into pointless anger rages.

I am a nerd (or dork? I don't know), a software engineer and I started to hate what technology has bacame.

This is a self-hosted, single-user instance running on snac2.

I have a quite sophisticated movie-downloading and distribution system: one service searches the web and manages downloading movies. Another one tries to auto-download subtitles. A third manages the torrent. Fourth is a streaming & encoding solution. All this on a home server with its own domains based on dynamic DNS.

I still think programming the VCR to start recording in the middle of the night was a higher achievement and all around cooler.

@michal Back in the days of dial-up Internet, and a single phone line, if I wanted to download something, I'd have to use a restartable protocol, then start the job before I went to bed, but add a cron job to wake up at 0530 and kill that process. And I'd repeat that for several days until I had the entire file.

BTW, you should look for "seedbox" online. Torrents share your IP with all the media companies who are looking for people to sue. (I switched to USENET nzb files, and it was faster.)

      @michal A fair point. My switch to Usenet happened after my ISP blocked me due to use of torrents. My immediate thought was, "You're watching my traffic?!" So I got a VPN, then found that torrents start in Usenet, that nzb's are a list of usenet post id's with all the parts of a file, and that my usenet provider (NOT my ISP) permitted multiple parallel downloads.

      So that plus the VPN actually made the whole process much _faster_ than torrent. I almost sent a thank-you note to the isp. ;)
