This is my new, future account. While most interaction still happen on the bsd.cafe one, I aim to migrate fully here.

I am posting mostly culture, emacs, bsd and anti-ai based ramblings. I don't curse and I try not bait people into pointless anger rages.

I am a nerd (or dork? I don't know), a software engineer and I started to hate what technology has bacame.

Has anyone tried returning from 27'' monitor to something like 16''? There's quite a number of "portable" ones out there and they look interesting?

@michal For one of my main client projects, I have to do a lot of testing with different displays. So I have a couple such portable displays, so I can do some work when I'm on the road, and also because they're more convenient to work with in my office when I need a display with a specific resolution.
A few things to look out for in practical use:
- DPI. One of my displays is a 13" 4K. I have good eyes, and at 200%, the text is at the small end of comfortable. I'd probably go for min 16" at 4K.

    - DPI, cont: I also have a 13" 1080p display, and I find the pixels on that to be annoyingly coarse at typical laptop display viewing distances. Around 2.5K-3K is probably optimal.
    - Build & panel quality. There are a lot of quite cheap devices out there from unknown brands. I have one such display and its colours are pretty washed-out compared to a high quality laptop display. Additionally, the frame has hard aluminium edges & the screen surface is sensitive like a desktop display's.

      - Portability (if you care); the cheap display is a little fragile and will damage things with its hard edges. The better-built ones on the other hand are robust and come with a carry case, but are heavier and fatter than an iPad. I haven't yet seen any as well-built and thin as a good tablet but acting as a simple display.
      - Lack of VESA mount (if you care); these things generally don't have any threaded holes for mounting on an arm.

        my vision is to do less multi-tasking. My Macbook is 16'' and the estate is easily enough for that. My 27'' inch makes me have a lot of unused windows opened at the same time, or just blank space.

        Would you consider making such portable 16'' as your primary display?

          @michal As far as I can tell, my eyes and neck experience less strain when the screen is further away, so I'd probably say no as the primary when not on the road. (with glasses correcting my short-sightedness of course)
          What physical resolution is your 27" and have you experimented with different scale modes? Usually uncomfortable screen real estate means the problem is DPI/resolution, not physical size.

            @michal A large screen with 200-210dpi a little further away than my outstretched arm seems to be about perfect for me at 200% scaling, or 100-105dpi at 100%. (though the smoother text at 200% is very nice indeed)
            Popular options for that are 5120x2880 or 2560x1440 at 27"; my current primary is a 3440x1440 34" ultra-wide which is nice aside from the rough text. There are a bunch of affordable-ish 6K displays now on the market I'd love to try.

              @michal I also have a 27" with 4K and to be honest, that one was a mistake. I just can't get on with it - non-integer scaling just doesn't look good at that sort of DPI.

                It's not that I can't see it clearly - I can. The problem is with the physical space, as I have no good way to use it. I find that smaller screen make it easier for me to have 1 window open and simply do work there - instead of half screen Slack and half Emacs: Slack has 2 splits, and Emacs has 6. What the hell, let's throw Firefox there as well.

                  @michal I guess the thing is, none of that is in my experience related to physical display size, and all to do with logical resolution (pt). So I'd experiment with larger scaling modes and see if those work better for you in terms of screen real estate even if they don't look great.

                    @michal I was given, gratis, a 16 inch portable monitor 6 months ago. I have yet to plug it in.
