This is my new, future account. While most interaction still happen on the bsd.cafe one, I aim to migrate fully here.

I am posting mostly culture, emacs, bsd and anti-ai based ramblings. I don't curse and I try not bait people into pointless anger rages.

I am a nerd (or dork? I don't know), a software engineer and I started to hate what technology has bacame.

This is a self-hosted, single-user instance running on snac2.

I may replace my phone with a Jelly Star later this year. The size is a much bigger issue than I anticipated.

@michal unihertz.com/en-de/products/je That one? Isn't that a tad too small to be comfortable?

There's no such thing as "too small to be comfortable". Just ask my wife.

(I found the iPhone 13 mini to be a bit large at times. iPhone 4 was perfect.)

@michal Well on the size of 13 mini or 4 being very nice I can wholeheartedly agree. Those were comfortable sizes. I was thinking back to a Sony Xperia-smartphone I had many years ago that looked quite similar. Was super pocketable and nice to phone with, but everything else was... meh.

This is the trick: I don't want anything else. Call, SMS, run an app when needed. I love how inconvenient my e-ink phone is. It's just too big (and has huge problems with android auto).

@michal Well in that regard I really love my Nokia flipphone and would really love to still be able to use my Xperia Pro with slider-keyboard.

@michal Just on the weekend my chunky Samsungs battery ran out and I had to be reachable - so I tossed the sim-card into my Nokia Flipphone and went out and about. Gosh golly, it was liberating af.

I used a Jelly 2 (~74mm screen diagonal) for months. The only time I had real issues with it was looking at maps. I am using a Jelly Max right now. Size is fine for me. I just replaced the screen (myself, with parts Unihertz sells on their website) last week rather than get a newer phone

but this is... just a normal smartphone. I don't want such a hellish, soul-sucking device.

Like I said, the 74mm device was fine, until I needed to look at maps. Absent that, I would have used it longer. The Jelly Max is much bigger, but still a lot smaller than other phones. I got a lot of attention using the tiny Jelly 2, including comparisons to Zoolander. And it was delightfully light in my pocket

@michal I wonder how much of that price is driven by RAM costs? I recently bought some servers. Double the RAM doubled the price. So Dell is giving away their servers for free, but charging only for RAM. Weird.

I think they are expensive not for real reasons, but for novelty.
